Brief description of the institution:
Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) is ranked amongst the 200 best universities of the world, as shown in the primary university rankings (QS 2020, THE WUR 2020; ARWU 2020). Moreover, it is ranked within the top 10 new universities with greatest international projection, prestige and reference worldwide and in Europe. In 2009, the UAB was recognized as a Campus of International Excellence.
The UAB is one of the most consolidated public universities of Spain. It is the fourth university in Spain in volume of scientific activity Scimago Institution Rankings World Report (SIR WR 2020). Since the beginning of EC Horizon 2020 programme (1/1/2014) the UAB has been funded with +32M€ for +60 Horizon 2020 European Projects, where 8 are leaded by UAB, including 8 ERC projects. Regarding the Marie Curie Actions, within the framework of FP7 UAB participated in a total of 45 projects (at least one for each action) and hosted 51 fellows. For H2020 we have been awarded in 23 MSCA, 13 of them Individual Fellowships.
Currently, UAB offers 105 bachelor’s degrees, covering a wide range of fields such as humanities and arts, social sciences, health sciences, technology and physical sciences. Furthermore, the UAB offers 141 Official Master’s degrees, 133 UAB master’s degrees, as well as 9 Erasmus Mundus Master's degrees and 69 PhD programmes (more 4,000 PhD students were enrolled during 2019-2020). The University has over 37,700 students, almost 3,700 researchers and teaching staff, and it hosts more than 6,000 foreign students.
Description of the Centre/Research Group:
The AFIN Centre and Research Group welcomes 1 applicant for La Caixa Junior Leader- Retaining Fellowship to carry out a three year research within the field of health and life sciences, reproduction, care, loss, childhood and family. The AFIN Research Group is based at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona campus in Bellaterra, Barcelona.
Since its creation in 2004, the AFIN-UAB is a consolidated interdisciplinary and international research group, with highly experienced researchers trained in different disciplines in the social and medical sciences (such as social, cultural and medical anthropology, sociology, education, law, medicine, psychology, and social work). AFIN focuses on the study of human reproduction (adoption, ARTS, gamete and embryo donation, third-party reproduction, surrogacy); sexual and reproductive health, rights and justice; fertility care and preservation, pregnancy and birth; cross-border health, care and carework; family, childhood and youth; sex/gender issues; death.
AFIN-UAB combines qualitative and quantitative methodologies, with an ethnographic approach and a strong commitment to ensuring knowledge transfer.
AFIN-UAB offers a fully equipped office, the AFIN Centre, located within a 2-minute walk from Bellaterra train station.
Research / Project Description
AFIN-UAB welcomes an applicant to the 1 La Caixa Junior Leader- Retaining Fellowship to enhance the creative and innovative potential of the research, through the training and international mobility. The objective of the Postdoctoral Junior Leader fellowships programme is to select outstanding researchers in terms of the originality and importance of their contributions in their scientific discipline. AFIN Research Group analyses the challenges (at individual, family and social levels) of changes in reproductive patterns to identify the collaboration and tensions between the interests and rights of intended parents, ‘third-party’ providers, intermediaries/brokers and the individuals –children and adults– born through these processes. Therefore, a candidate with a high research profile that aims to analyse the cultural, social and political aspects of the following fields – but not limited to – will be prioritize:
- Health and Life Sciences: Medicine, Public Health, Health Management, Genetics, Human Biology, Biotechnology.
- Human Reproduction
- Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights and Justice
- Cross-border Health and Care
- Family and Kinship
- Childhood and Youth Studies
- Sex and Gender Studies
Who can apply?
At the official deadline for the submission of proposals (07/10/2020), researchers (*):
- Nationality: ANY nationality
- Experience: They should have earned a doctoral degree two to seven years prior to the deadline.
- The date of the doctoral thesis defence will be understood as the date when the doctoral degree was earned.
- Mobility: Candidates must have resided or have carried out their main activity in Spain for more than twelve months in the three years prior to the abovementioned deadline.

Candidates must meet eligibility criteria of La Caixa Junior Leader-Retaining call.
Interested candidates are asked to submit:
- An outline of the proposed research project stating its originality, innovation and potential impact (max. 2 pages)
- A copy of the most recent CV, containing names and contacts of at least three references. La Caixa will contact them, therefore candidates are recommended to contact them as soon as possible.
- A letter of interest explaining the applicant’s motivation to be hosted by AFIN-UAB and highlighting the suitability between host centre and line of research with the trajectory of the candidate (max. 1 page).

The proposal will be pre-selected through an internal evaluation. Candidates will be informed of the results of the first stage of process by August 19, 2020. Selection interviews will be held by August 20, 2020. Candidates will hear of AFIN-UAB’s final decision by August 21, 2020.
